The Ship's Bells for
HMCS SAULT STE MARIE J334 / 176
The story behind the bell: The ship's original name was HMCS THE SOO but due to objections from citizens and city council, she was renamed HMCS SAULT STE MARIE prior to launching. The original bell - HMCS THE SOO - was given to the local sea cadet corps, RCSCC ROYAL SOVEREIGN for safe keeping and to be used on a weekly basis on their training nights. A new bell was created with the proper name: HMCS SAULT STE MARIE. After the ship was paid off, the bell ended up in the bell room aboard HMCS HAIDA when she was at Ontario Place. Parks Canada bought the ship and restored it back to its original state. This meant that the many artifacts aboard had to find new homes. A 2nd HMCS THE SOO bell found its way to the Warrant Officers and Sergeant's Mess at CFB Kingston.
The location of the bell engraved "HMCS SAULT STE MARIE" is unknown.
