McCUAIG, Eric Alexander Duncan - was born in Edmonton, Alberta, the son of Hazel and Stanley McCuaig, Q.C. He was the grandson of Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first Premier of Alberta. Eric served with distinction in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He returned to Edmonton after the war and graduated from the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law in 1946. Eric was the eldest in the family; he had two sisters, Ruth Bate (Ed) who predeceased him, Helen McEvoy (Frank, deceased) and one brother Harwood McCuaig, (Ed Klippstein), who also predeceased him in November 2015. Eric was twice married, his first wife, Pauline, died in 1960. His second wife, Vernis (divorced), survives him. Eric is survived by his daughters, Sandra (John Pope), Brenda (David McLean), Barbara (Derek Squirell) and Erica McCuaig (Jane Dean). He had 10 grandchildren, Jill (Colin Nikiforuk), Nancy (Brendan Burgart), Alison (Warren Brazier), Jenifer (Alex Snell), Jason (Andrea McLean), Sacha (Melanie McLean), Rebecca (Rudy Petryna), Cameron (Elizabeth Squirell), Samuel and Chase Dean- McCuaig. He also has 12 great-grandchildren, Kately and Riley Nikiforuk, Bryn and Rhea Burgart, Caden Brazier, Hadley and Jack Snell, Hazel, Liam and Kate McLean, Lucy McLean and Oliver Petryna. Eric practiced law in Edmonton with the firm of McCuaig Desrochers his whole professional career. He was a Bencher of the Law Society and served a term as President of the Law Society of Alberta. He served on the Senate of the University of Alberta and on the board of the University Hospital in Edmonton for many years. Eric was a true gentleman, well-mannered and courteous, a friend to all. He was well liked and highly respected by his colleagues and friends. Eric lived most of his life in Edmonton, but moved to Vancouver in May 2010 to be closer to his family. Eric set high standards for himself and lived up to them. He will be missed by all of his family and his many friends. Celebration of Life. Please join us on Sunday, May 15 at 12:30 p.m. for a service followed by tea at the First Presbyterian Church, 10025 105 St. in Edmonton to remember a life well lived. Eric served in the RCNVR during WW2 and transferred to the RCNR post war.
