ECONOMIDES, John Nicholas - Died peacefully at home on January 19, 2005. John was a husband to Sophia Agetees for fifty-seven years. Father of Nicholas and Peter (Dina), proud grandfather of Sophie and Denise. Also survived by his sister Catherine and brother George (Helen). John graduated with a B.Comm. from Sir George Williams College (Concordia) in 1941. He had a long and accomplished career in various managerial positions at Imperial Tobacco and Imasco. On retirement he held the position of Corporate Officer and Chairman of Imasco's Corporate Donations. John served in the Royal Canadian Navy (1943-1945) in the North Atlantic and retired with rank of Lieutenant. On retirement John devoted his time to an impressive number of charitable and non-profit organizations. He worked determinedly for the betterment of society. John raised millions of dollars for health care, education and social services. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kidney Foundation of Canada for almost twenty years and held various offices on both the national and provincial level. He also served on the Board of Directors of the following organizations: Montreal Children's Hospital; Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation; Reddy Memorial Hospital Foundation; the Association D'Entraide Le Chainon, Hellenic Community of Montreal; YMCA Foundation; Vanier College Foundation; The Portage Foundation; The Montreal General Hospital Foundation; Alzheimer Society of Montreal. John was awarded Doctorate of Laws in 1998 from Concordia University and was designated Governor Emeritus of Concordia University in 1995. He received awards and special recognitions from the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Hellenic Ladies Benevolent Association, Quebec Society for Disabled Children, Hellenic Community of Montreal. John was invested in the Order of Canada in 1997. Resting at Urgel Bourgie, 1255 Beaumont Avenue, Town of Mount Royal. Visitation Saturday, January 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, January 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 24 at 11 a.m. at St. George Cathedral, 2455 Cote Ste Catherine Road and thence to Mount Royal Cemetery.
