TANNER, Vincent Wilfred - (15 November 2013) Age 92, of Halifax/ Beaver Bank, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2013, with his family by his side in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Blue Rocks, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of Beverly and Sophia (Knickle) Tanner. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Hilda; daughters, Nancy Rambo (Ron) and Paulette Rhoddy (Emery); brothers, Nelson, Clifford; cousin, Charles; sisters-in-law, Velma, Jean, and Irene. He was predeceased by his daughter, Marsha; brothers, Edwin, Richard, Stanley, Frank, Hurlbert, Walter; sisters, Evelyn, Edna, and Hattie and Elizabeth in infancy. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren, plus too many nieces and nephews to count. Vincent went to sea at the age of 11, fishing off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland until 1941 when he came to Halifax to join the navy. He met his lifetime love Hilda here soon after joining. During his service, he served on the British Destroyer 'Harvester' and our own destroyer 'Niagara' and on the 'Ross Norman' a Degaussing ship. After the war he went to work for DND then to Federal Public Works, retiring with 37 years of service. During this time, he was active in St. John's United Church of Beaver Bank, where he served as a steward for some years. He was also a member of the Beaver Bank Kinsac Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Deputy Chief for his last several years. Vincent spent many happy times camping with his children in a tent, then later years he purchased a motorhome and joined Twin Seas Caravan Club, where he and Hilda made many friends and spent many happy weekends on outings around the Atlantic Provinces. They spent eight winters in Florida and travelled the perimeter of the United States. They were also lucky enough to travel to Hong Kong to visit a granddaughter and also to England to visit another granddaughter. They also visited Thailand, China, and Continental Europe. Vincent was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Calais Branch No. 162, Lower Sackville. Hilda and the family would like to thank all the staff at V6 East for their compassionate and loving care shown to Vincent since his admission 16 months ago. Cremation has taken place, visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 21, and the funeral service will be held on Friday, November 22, at 11 a.m., both in Atlantic Funeral Homes, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville, Rev. Debbie Aitkins officiating, reception to follow. Interment in Oakridge Memory Gardens in Lower Sackville. Family flowers only please, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Research or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
