In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HAGGIS, George Paul - One of Canada’s “Greatest Generation”, George Haggis passed away on February 28th, 2018 at the Belleville General Hospital in his 93rd year. Born March 15, 1925 in Port Hope, Ontario. Son of the late Paul George Haggis and Gladys (nee Howard). He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 67 years Octavia (nee Ingram, born Mirror, Alberta); children Paul (Bonnie), John (Jane), Cynthia Bennett (Hugh) and Kathryn; grandchildren Philip and Ian, Melody Kennedy (Sean), Alexandra and Olivia, Robert and Hillary, and great-grandson Austin, his sister Margaret and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his brother John, daughter Victoria and grandson George. He served Canada during WW II, joining the Army in December 1940. In December 1942 he transferred to the Navy and spent the rest of the war in combat on the North Atlantic. Following the war, he returned to Belleville where he joined the family hotel business, which he owned and operated until his retirement in the late 1980’s. “The Chartroom” figures prominently in the memory of many. As a founding member of the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club George was an avid sailor on “The Bay” and Lake Ontario. He was also a founding member of the Belleville Trap Club, a keen golfer and a charter member of The Fit Old Fools, skiing the Eastern Townships into his 80’s. An ardent supporter of Belleville, a great story teller and a real people person, he will be sadly missed. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 10th, 2018 at 1:00pm at the John R. Bush Funeral Home 80 Highland Ave., Belleville with visitation held from 12:00pm - 1:00pm. Reception to follow at the BQYC, Victoria Island, Belleville. If desired, donations to the Belleville General Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family.
