MACKINTOSH, Frank - Age 83 of Digby, passed away peacefully surrounded by love and with his family at his side on March 2, 2019. Frank was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to the late Frank and Marion Mackintosh. In his early years, Frank was a Petty Officer in the Navy, beginning his career at HMCS Cornwallis. It was during this time that he met his wife and love of his life, Marilyn, and decided to make Digby his permanent home. Frank spent 20 years serving his country and travelling the world before he retired in 1970. His second career was as a Stationary Engineer at Digby General Hospital where he worked for 25 years and served as president of the CUPE local. His love for community led him to run for town council where he served for nine years before becoming Mayor in 1985. As the longest serving Mayor in the town, Frank was involved in the early planning of the waterfront redevelopment, was a founding member of the Digby Scallop Days, and played an integral role in the planning and construction of the new arena, amongst other initiatives. Frank was devoted to his town and to his family, evident by the countless hours of volunteering, coaching sports and his selfless vision for community development. He served as president of the Minor Hockey Association and was on the board of directors of the Digby Recreation Commission, Tideview Terrace, the Digby Water Commission and the Police Commission to name a few. As a member of St. Patrick’s church, Frank was a former president of the Parish Council and continued to be involved in the church in various capacities over the years. While his accolades and awards are too many to list, he was most proud of being the first recipient of the Joe Casey Humanitarian Award for exceptional service to his community and the Scroll of Recognition for dedicated service from the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities. Frank is survived by his loving wife of more than 60 years, Marilyn (Hinxman) Mackintosh, his children; Julie (Roger) Caissie; Linda (Jon) Gallagher; Kelly (Diana) Mackintosh; Kirk (Kate) Mackintosh, Keith (Akiko) Mackintosh. He is also survived by his 11 beloved grandchildren; Ashley, Joshua, Lindsay, Adam, Thomas, Benton, Nicholas, Adam, Corbyn, Lauren and Ryan. His pride and joy were his great-grandchildren, Quinn, Cole, Logan, Chace, Aage, Zale and Jake, who he loved to Facetime and tease. He was the third sibling in a family of 13 and is survived by brothers and sisters; Kay, Russell, Bruce, David, Trudy, Patsy, Mary, Bobby, Mike, Gage and Brenda. He was predeceased by sister Lorraine (Lolly). Frank was a lifelong Boston Bruins fan and enjoyed teasing Montreal and Toronto supporters. His quick wit and sarcastic sense of humour were hallmarks of who he was, but his big heart and love for his family defined him. A special thank you to the staff at Digby General Hospital and the dedicated paramedics at Emergency Health Services (EHS), who provided amazing care and comfort to Frank during his final days. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 6 at Jayne’s Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Patrick’s church, Autism Canada and Digby General Hospital. To quote Frank, “I think I’m going to blast off now.”
