John Longard, international oceanographer dies at 67 John Rupert Longard, 67, of Halifax, internationally known military oceanographer, died Saturday after a lengthy illness. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Alfred and Amelia (Wright) Longard. He was educated in Halifax city schools and graduated from Dalhousie University with a Master of Science degree. During the Second World War he was a Lieutenant-Commander in the RCNVR, following which he worked with the Naval Research Establishment. From 1953 to 1960 he was scientific advisor to the Admiral (Atlantic Command). From 1960 to 1963, he held a diplomatic appointment as scientific liaison officer to the Canadian Joint Staff in Washington, D.C., following which he returned to the Naval Research Establishment, later known as the Defence Research Establishment (Atlantic) in Dartmouth. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Church, the Waegwoltic Club, the Nova Scotia Historical Society, the Nova Scotia Institute of Science, the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia and a life member of the American Geophysical Union. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Nickerson; a son, Arthur, Halifax; a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. John Hood), Yarmouth; a brother, Edward, Halifax; two sisters, Gladys and Annie, both of Halifax; and three grandchildren. The body is at Snow's Funeral Home, Halifax, where funeral service will be Wednesday 2 p.m., Dr. Gordon MacDermid and Dr. W.C. Anderson officiating. Cremation to follow.
