LAPHEN, Frederick Walter - A well-known Halifax naval man, Chief Petty Officer Frederick Walter Laphen (retired) died Saturday morning at Camp Hill Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 54 years of age. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John T. Laphen. He received his education in city schools and then entered into a varied and lengthy service career. Mr. Laphen enlisted in World War I at the age of 17 with the 8th Siege Battery, CEF before proceeding overseas. In 1923 he joined the newly formed Royal Canadian Navy and subsequently served on both East and West Coasts. During the Second Great War he performed various sea and shore duties until the time of proceeding to pension. Surviving besides his widow, Bertha are two sons, Lieutenant Fred C., stationed with the RCN in Halifax and Sergeant Harold D., serving with the RCASC in Sydney, also six sisters, two brothers and four grandchildren. Remains are resting at the Halifax Funeral Home, Quinpool Road, and the funeral will be held from there Tuesday morning in time for 9 o'clock Requiem Mass at St. Catherine's Church, Reverend Father Carroll officiating. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald, Mon, 12 Apr 1954 / Researched by George Newbury)

 

Frederick W. Laphen was awarded the LSGM in 1938.
