COOLEN, Mervin Leithwood - Born November 24, 1917, passed away peacefully on August 16, 1999, in Braeside Nursing Home, Middle Musquodoboit. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle (Day); son, Bill (JoAnne); daughters, Diane (Don Russell), Margi (Whitfield Andrews); grandchildren, Shawn (Kelly) Coolen, David (Tracey) Russell, Dawn Russell, Debbie Russell and Colette Ross; great-grandchildren, Ella, Tallulah and Taylor; brother, Chester (Ruth); sisters, Marion (Fred Creelman), Halifax; Amy (Jack Pinnow), Moose Jaw; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Chester and Ella (Westhaver) Coolen (Fox Point); brothers, Paul, Wesley and Roger; sisters, Shirley, Nora Nicholas. Mervin served overseas during the Second World War and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Ship Harbour. He was an avid card player, especially crib. He worked as a maintenance mechanic at the liferaft shop at HMCS Dockyard in Halifax from where he retired to spend his days at home in Clam Harbour. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Rowlings Funeral Home. The ashes will be sprinkled over the water at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to the Braeside Nursing Home or charity of one's choice. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 18 Aug 1999)
Merve Coolen was born in Fox Point, Lunenburg Co., NS in 1917. He served as an Able Seaman in the RCNVR. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Atlantic Star, the CVSM and the 1939-45 War Medal. He was assigned to HMCS Stadacona, Avalon, Cornwallis, and Niobe and served in HMCS Prince Herny. (RCL Book of Recognition)
