John was born in Truro, NS to Lawrence McCabe and Lillian Coldwell. He joined the Truro 77 Air Cadet Squadron in his early years. He enlisted in the Navy during WW2 and completed his basic training at HMCS Cornwallis in NS and at HMCS Montcalm, Quebec City, QC. John served in HMCS Alberton and HMCS New Liskeard. After the war John was employed by CNR until he retired in 1982.
As of May 2019, John is alive and well living in NS.
