Richard Melbourne Bone

Lieutenant-Commander, RCN

Born: 23 May 1930, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Died: 16 Apr 2013, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

BONE, Richard Melbourne - 82, of Dartmouth, passed away in the early hours of April 16, 2013 at Dartmouth General Hospital. Left to miss this wonderful man are his best friend and beloved wife of 57 years Janet (Horwood), his three loving children Andrew (Kristen Harper), Jamie (Louise Arsenault) and Susan (Ben Davis), and his grandson Hewson. Dick was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on May 23, 1930, a son of the late Charles Melbourne Bone and Dorothy (Wilson) Bone, and brother to Rollie, Barbara and Ken. After graduating from high school he worked at Algoma Steel, but soon enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in the Officers’ Training Program. His military career took him to the UK for flight training, and saw him serving on many naval ships (Magnificent, Huron, La Hulloise, Bonaventure) and aircraft (Sea Kings, Avengers, Sea Venoms). He served with Shearwater’s HS-50, VX-10 and 881 Squadrons, and taught at Stadacona’s Maritime Warfare School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree (Economics and German) from Dalhousie University in 1977. After retiring from the Canadian Forces, Dick grew his hair and beard and taught math and science for the trades for sixteen years at the Dartmouth Vocational School. Dick’s sense of humour and creative spirit were major forces in his life: he painted, drew, cartooned, designed restaurant menus, built folk art pieces, and was a world-class wildlife carver. He was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carvers’ and Artists’ Association, and competed internationally. He taught widely, and volunteered at many schools, teaching young children how to carve and paint. Dick led an active, engaged life full of kindness, generosity and zest. Dick was predeceased by his dear brother Rollie (and wife Doreen). In addition to his immediate family, Dick is also survived by his sister Barbara (and husband Ken) McCracken and brother Ken Bone in Sault Ste. Marie, cousin Bruce (wife Elaine and daughter Amanda) Lewis in Ottawa, and many nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, Dick will be cremated, and his ashes buried at sea.
