CRESS, Sydney Melvin - 73, of Bear River, died Saturday in Digby General Hospital. Born in Bridgetown, he was a son of the late Clarence and Annie (Larrimore) Cress. He was a retired stoker from CFB Cornwallis. He was a veteran of the Second World War, a member of Bear River Baptist Church and the Royal Canadian Legion, Bear River. He is survived by his second wife, the former Leta Wilson; two sons, John, Mississippi, and Melvin, Bear River; two stepsons, Theodore Rice, Bear River, and Maurice Rice, Kingston; a step-daughter, Mrs. Frances Fetter, Bear River; five brothers, Leonard, Massachusetts; Ralph, St. Catherines, Ont.; Donald, Deep Brook; Richard, Niagara Falls, and Lionel (Pete), Princedale; six sisters, Mrs. Lottie McAdoo, Massachusetts; Mrs. Ethel Geyer, New Hampshire; Mrs. Bessie Kilmister and Florence (Mrs. Frank Pattent), both of Ontario; Mrs. Naomi Wright, Waldec, and Clara (Mrs. Robert Hersey), Culloden; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Charlotte Milner, and a sister Hazel. The body is in Jayne's Funeral home, Digby. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bear River Baptist Church, Rev John Kaulback officiating, with burial in Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River.
