WHITTAKER, James Arthur (Bing) - age 83 of Dartmouth, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2019 in Northwood Terrace. Born August 9, 1936 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan he was the son of the late Les and Mabel (Crosby) Whittaker. Bing is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty (Naugler); son, James "Jim" (Carolina), North Carolina; daughter, Beverly (Tracy), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Samantha, Michael, Isabella, James; brother, Lloyd (Pauline); sister, Mary (Bob) and many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his grand dog, Chenille. He was predeceased by his brother, Keith and sister in law, Elaine. He was raised in Powassan, Ontario and moved to Halifax when he joined the Navy. During his service in the Navy, Bing moved through the non- commissioned ranks before taking his commission. After serving on too many ships to mention, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant. He was involved in the decorating the navy ships for Christmas and won first place for the best display. After leaving the Navy Bing brought home some of the decorations he won and Santa and his reindeer spent many a year on display on the front yard of the family home in Dartmouth to the delight of the neighbours. After retirement he started building cranes at the Halifax Dockyard while working for Favco. Bing was always an avid sports fan from coaching his kids in soccer, hockey and ringette and ending by becoming a "Super Fan" of the Cougars. Nothing was more important to Bing than his family and his home. He enjoyed gardening and provided fresh vegetables to many fortunate neighbours and was known for his superb backyard ice skating rink complete with music and lights. Bing was always willing to offer a helping hand and many homes in Dartmouth have a "Bing Style Repair" including duct tape and toothbrushes. Every job started with a Tim Hortons coffee break. Bing was an extreme animal lover and could often be seen walking his dog, Chipper, who he brought home unexpectedly to his wife Betty. We would like to thank the staff of Northwood for their care and compassion. Visitation will be held from 7-9pm on Friday, October 11th with a funeral service 1pm Saturday October 12 both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens with reception to follow in funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia or to a local animal shelter.
