ROSE, George Thomas - Age 93, of Dartmouth, formerly of Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully November 14, 2019 in Dartmouth General Hospital, with family by his side. Born in Shubenacadie, he was a son of the late Frank and Emma (Coble) Rose. George, also known to many as "Gordie" was a hard worker from a very early age. One of his first jobs was working in the woods hauling trees with horses which he often expressed a great compassion and love for. George served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. After serving his country he had various jobs in Dartmouth. One of his favourite stories while driving taxi was the night he picked up "Hank Snow". George was employed at CFB Shearwater as a heavy equipment operator for many, many years until he retired. He received many awards during his lifetime for, but not limited to, mechanic work, safe driving and crane operation. George taught himself how to take apart engines and the like and put them back together, showing his great mechanical skills. For those who knew him, loved him, and were friends, you never had to question his love, friendship and respect; he gave it freely. When George wasn't working his day/night job at CFB Shearwater, you would find him fixing someone's car from the neighbourhood or a friend's vehicle in his garage at home. After his retirement from CFB Shearwater, George and his wife Norma had a great love for the outdoors, travelling as tourists and visiting relatives in the Maritimes. George was an avid gardener and had a love of hunting especially with his nephew, Gary for many, many years; the stories those two had are endless. George also enjoyed hunting with his dogs, one time he lost the dog or the dog lost him, George left his jacket and went home, when he went back the next day he found the dog where he left his jacket, he was a very smart man. George and Norma loved when their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends came to visit them at the farm. The family of George would like to thank Shirley and Wanda of Number 1 Quality Homecare for the exceptional care they gave to George "Papa" during the last few years. Papa loved those ladies with all his heart. Shirley and Wanda were not only caregivers, they became family and we will be forever grateful for the care and kindness George "Papa" and the family received. The family also wishes to extend their thanks to the DVA Veterans Affairs for their support. George is survived by his children, Tom (Irene) Rose; stepdaughter, Margaret Ann Hebert; stepsons, Blaine (Helen) Hebert, and Wendell (Mary) Hebert; grandchildren, Riley, Candice, Daniel, Tiffanie, Stephanie, James, Jessica, and Graeme; great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Roman; siblings, Lilly Glendenning, Sarah Porter, Harvey (Nancy) Rose, David (Betty) Rose; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma; siblings, Reggie, Jim, Blanche, Charlie, and Mary; step-son, Bernard. Visitation will be held beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 20th until time of funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Hwy. 2, Shubenacadie, Rev. Glenn Eason officiating. A reception will follow the service in the funeral home hospitality area. Interment in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Fort Ellis. Flowers would be greatly appreciated by the family or a memorial donation may be made to the charity of your choice. "Papa we love you, miss you and you will forever be in our hearts, may you rest in God's peace forever."
