Died: 11 Dec 2003, Kelowna, British Columbia

 

TURNER, Thomas Charles - Passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC on December 11th, 2003, surrounded by his family. Born in 1923 in Niagara Falls, the youngest of four. Survived by his loving children and grandchildren, Tim (Junko Okazaki, Maya and Danjiro), Patrick (Nadine Caron) and Shelagh (Doug Rankmore, Annie and Sydney), and his oldest brother, Roderick in California. Tim has joined forever his beloved wife, Georgia (Phillips), brother Jay, and sister Betty. Tim lived an incredible life filled with love, joy and adventures. His life was marked by integrity, service, loyalty and love for his family. He was full of tales of mischief and laughter. Tim and Georgia made a brilliant team who created a warm and loving home and family. They were part of a wonderful community on Imperial Street who looked out for each other over the 41 years they lived there. Tim's philosophy was always to lead by example. Time spent doing chores and building traditions in Algonquin Park with the Turner family was amongst the happiest of Tim's life. He travelled the world to pursue his love of hunting, the outdoors and adventure. He instilled in his family a respect for others and the environment. Tim had a thriving Orthodontics practice in Toronto and was part of the University of Toronto Dentistry faculty. Graduated in 1943 from Upper Canada College, he earned a BSc in Dentistry from Trinity College, U of T after WWII, completed his MSc in Dentistry at University of Southern California in 1952. Tim joined the war effort in 1943 to begin a parallel career in the Canadian Navy that changed his life. He served as a wireless telegrapher on the HMCS Arnprior in the North Atlantic Convoy escort duty. After the war, he returned to university and continued in the naval reserve. From 1966-70 he served as Commanding Officer of HMCS York and was appointed a Naval Aide to then Governor General, Roland Mitchener. In 1981, Tim was National President of the Naval Officers Association of Canada establishing ongoing scholarship awards for young people in the naval reserve and regular force. Tim spent much time diving with the Navy finding treasures in the Great Lakes. He was a member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires and was a dedicated member of the Naval Club of Toronto. Tim will be buried at sea in 2004. Please raise a glass to a life well lead. (Globe and Mail 20 Dec 2003)
