Paterson died at Portrush Cottage Hospital, Portrush Northern Ireland as the result of multiple injuries received in an accidental fall from a cliff while on leave from his ship HMCS LEASIDE. SBA Paterson is buried in the Londonderry City Cemetery, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, UK.
