In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
STEVENS, Frank D.L. (Jr.). - was in the Mercantile marine for the first half of WWI. He sailed in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean during this time (pre-convoy) and received the Mercantile Marine medal. In 1917 he joined the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve (RNCVR) and was initially assigned to the HMCS Niobe for patrols; he received his warrant as Mate and commanded several of the drifters. In late 1918 he took a position commanding a vessel for the Ministry of Transport (which later became the Coast Guard). In 1939 his vessel was called up, and so he was again in service (part of the merchant navy manning pool designations) during wartime in the North Atlantic. Following WWII he returned to regular command duties at sea with the coast guard (CGS Franklin and CGS Dollard). He died in 1963.
