KRILOW, William John (Bill) - passed away peacefully on January 11, 2020 at the age of 86. Bill was born in Rabbit Lake, Sask. on February 14, 1933 to John and Katerina Krilow. At the age of four, his family moved to Vernon, B.C. where he spent the remainder of his youth. In August 1950, Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. He received his training at HMCS Cornwallis and HMCS Stadacona as a Radio Operator/Meteorologist. From January 1952 to July 1953, Bill served aboard HMCS Crusader during the Korean War. Following his service in the war, he was posted to HMCS Stadacona and served on various ships (Haida, Sioux, Crescent, Nipigon, Cape Scott) with the NATO fleet. Another of Bill's more interesting accomplishments was in 1954 when he became "A Charter Member of the Order of Aurora Borealis" by remaining above the Arctic Circle in the "Land of the Midnight Sun" for over one year at Padloping Island's Weather Station. In June 1971, with the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class (Electronics Technologist), Bill was honourably released from service following an accident, at which time he settled in North Sydney to raise his family. Bill was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 19 North Sydney. Bill was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Katerina, and his sisters, Pauline and Ann. Bill was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Florence, in 2012. He will be forever missed and survived by his children: Natalie (Stephen) Farnell of Enfield, and John (Helen) Krilow of Georges River; grandchildren, Jessica (Colby) Bevis of Stellarton, and Leigha (Nick) Farnell of Halifax, and Ben Krilow of Georges River; step grandchildren, Matthew (Niki) MacDougall of Middle Sackville and Marc (Jenna) MacDougall of Middle Sackville, and Amanda (Keith) Buis of St. John's, N.L. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Kynleigh, Meilla, Willa, and Ash, as well as numerous nieces and a nephew. The family would like to thank the staff of Harbourview Veteran's Wing, Sydney Mines, for their excellent care of Bill over the last six years. There will be no formal service and cremation has already taken place. As per Bill's wishes, his ashes will be spread at sea during a naval ceremony in Halifax in the spring.
