For Posterity's Sake A Royal Canadian Navy Historical Project
In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SMITH, Peter Frazer - We are saddened to announce the passing, on February 3, 2020, of Peter Frazer Smith. Born September 9, 1953 in Ramsgate, England to Joan and Ken Smith, he emigrated to Canada with his family when he was four. As a Forces brat, he lived in various places in Canada and Europe before finally landing in Halifax/Dartmouth, which became his home. Frazer had a passionate, impulsive approach to life. He took advantage of any opportunity that came his way and if it worked out, great. If it didn't, he just moved on to the next thing. He tried university, the Navy and the Reserves before finding his true calling as a computer programmer. He started with MT&T in 1978 and spent most of his career there until he retired at age 55. They were good years working alongside colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends. Not someone who could sit still for long, he worked at a few jobs before settling in with Mariner Innovations until his second retirement in 2019. He had many interests, including winemaking, stained glass, photography, cooking, computers and motorcycles. But more than anything, he was crazy about his schnauzers, Toby and Zoey, and made sure they got their daily exercise, mostly in Shubie Park. He was a motorcycle instructor with Safety Services Nova Scotia. He loved nothing better than planning and going on long motorcycle trips across the States, including those he took with members of the Motormaids to their conferences. He did two cross-continent round trips and was preparing a third when he became ill. The family would like to thank all the medical professionals involved in his care – his family doctor, the emergency staff at both the Queen Elizabeth and the Dartmouth General hospitals, the ambulance paramedics, the nurses on the 11th floor of the Dixon Centre, and his doctors and nurses at the Oncology Centre. We would also like to thank the many friends who offered support. This contact, both in person and online, meant so much to him. He is survived by Laura, his wife of 42 years; his children Tamara (Alec), Amanda (Andrew) and Peter (Joanna); his brother Paul (Catherine) and sister Megan (Grant); his sister-in-law Janet and brother-in-law Brian, and Alec’s parents, George and Colleen. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at Mattatall's Funeral Home in Dartmouth on Tuesday, February 11, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, treat yourself to something nice.
