HILL, Gerald Henry Hill - 79, Bedford, passed away peacefully at home, on February 28, 2007, following a period of heart illness. Born in Bristol, England, he is survived by his wife Mary (Trett), son Geoffrey, Dartmouth, daughter Margot (Bill) Williams, Dartmouth, daughter Jessica (Rados) Miksa and son Robin both of Petawawa, Ontario. He is also survived by his grandchildren Claire and Chris Williams and Graham and Andrew Hill. He was predeceased by his parents Harry and Mabel (Folland). His career at sea began on HMS Conway leading to the British Merchant Navy during WW II on the Union Castle Line and continued in the Royal Canadian Navy until retirement in 1974. He worked in the Public Service with Health and Welfare Canada until final retirement in 1990. During these latter years he remained active in the Naval Reserve at HMCS Scotian until 1984. Throughout his life he was keenly interested in the Canadian Navy and belonged to the Naval Officers Association. In his later years he cultivated an interest in gardening, bridge, yoga and the welfare of animals. He often recounted his experiences, during the war, to family and friends and contributed to the Canadian Memory Project. Gerald maintained contact with many colleagues, friends especially life long friends Pam and David king of Somerset. Friends will fondly remember his cheerful companionship. Funeral service will be held at Cruikshanks Funeral Home in Halifax at 2:00pm on Saturday March 3, 2007. Donations in his memory may be made to the Pick of the Litter Society.
