McDOWELL, Russell Robert - Born in Drumheller, Alberta, Russ passed away in Victoria on June 14, 2010. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and is survived by his love of more than 65 years, Isobel, his children, Robert (Sandy) McDowell, (Rosemary), Patricia Fairbairn (Bill). Rusty McDowell (Donna), Colleen Cook (Bill), his grandchildren, Scott McDowell, Susanne McKinstry, Jillean and Colin McDowell, Billy and Sara Cook, and his great grandchildren, Anna, Jonathan, and Keeva McDowell, and Madeline (Maddy) McKinstry. Russ lived and contributed a life of service to his country and his community. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941-1966 and was a decorated World War II and Korean War Veteran. He served his community through leadership and service to the Chief & Petty Officers' Association, Masonic Lodge, and the Royal Canadian Legion (a proud member of more than 60 years). Russ was an avid sportsman enjoying many athletic and recreational activities over the years. He was active in lacrosse, curling, softball and golf with the latter providing much enjoyment both as a participant and a spectator. He loved the comraderie and the friendly competition. with family, friends, and all who knew him, Russ was a caring, compassionate man with a wonderful sense of humour that never wavered. His quick and easy smile would often erupt into rolling laughter. Russ will be missed but not forgotten. When we think of him, we may shed a tear or two, then smile, savouring the many happy memories. The family would like to thank the staff of Cringe Center for Seniors and the Royal Jubilee Hospital for extending their professionalism, kindness, and care during this difficult time.
Russell served in the RCN from 02 Jun 1941 until 06 Jun 1966. Russell joined the navy as a Stoker 2nd class. He qualified as a Hard Hat Diver 2nc Class and later 1st class. In 1949 he re-mustered to the stores branch.
