CARL, Charles Gordon, Sig, V54340, RCNVR MPK - 04 Oct 1944 - HMCS CHEBOGUE - Son of Cecil V. and Dena Carl, of Meadow Lake, SK.
Sig Carl was closed up at his action station on the Quarterdeck when the ship was hit aft by enemy torpedo. He was thrown by the force of the explosion over the mast on to the Forecastle. Death was instantaneous.
Signalman Charles Gordon Carl was one of the seamen killed by the explosion when HMCS Chebogue was torpedoed by U-1227 in the north Atlantic. The Chebogue was towed 900 miles to Port Talbot, Wales, but was written off as irreparable after being driven ashore in a gale. Gordon's father Cecil Vincent Carl came from O'Neill, Holt Co., Nebraska, in 1906 and homesteaded northeast of Asquith, Saskatchewan. He married Dena (Rutt), also from Nebraska, at Saskatoon in 1913 and they later ranched at Horse Head and went into business at Meadow Lake in 1925. Gordon was born at Edam and was working as a clerk when he enlisted on February 09, 1943 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Two of his brothers, Cecil Jr. and Allan, served in the R.C.A.F.
