For Posterity's Sake A Royal Canadian Navy Historical Project
In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MORRISON , Donald Bruce -beloved husband of Jean of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, January 24, 2010, following a brief illness, at the Rocky View General Hospital, at the age of 84 years. Don was born and raised in Edmonton, where he enlisted in the Canadian Navy immediately following high school graduation at the age of seventeen years. When WWII ended Don stayed in the Naval Reserves until 1948 when he began a career in the oil patch with National Supply Ltd. It was then he was sent to Swift Current, Sask. where he met and married his wife Jean. Later in his working career Don was with Atco, Loblaws, and finally the Federal Government until his retirement. Don loved his children and grandchildren deeply and always looked forward to their many visits. Don was very involved in the Scout movement during the 1960's and he and the boys spent many great times at Camp Gardner located near Bragg Creek. Don was an accomplished ten pin bowler, but spent a considerable amount of time with his main hobby of leather crafting. He made many beautiful belts, wallets and purses. Don was a terrific all round handyman until his health failed in the recent years. Don loved the mountains and spent holidays camping with his family at either Radium or Penticton, B.C. from 1962 to 1992. Anyone who knew Don would recall that he loved to tease people and had a wicked sense of humour! (Part of being Scottish). He liked to attend the highland games and was very proud to wear the Morrison Tartan. Bagpipes were his favourite music. Don was so proud of being presented with the Sixty-Five Year Bar to his Legion, long service medal just this past November, 2009 at a special ceremony at Legion Branch No.285. Donald leaves to mourn, his wife of fifty-seven years Jean (nee McAvoy); four children, daughter Linda and sons Douglas (Elizabeth), Richard (Darlene) and Bruce (Jan); eleven grandchildren, Shane (Trina), Crystal (Clay), Curtis (Ebony), Robert, Jacqueline, Matthew, Michael, Alexander, Dallas, Austin, and Tyler; and one great-grandson Austin. Donald was predeceased by his father John, mother May and brother Frank. Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway's Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association, No. 204, 2323 - 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3 or directly to the charity of the donor's choice. A very special thank you from Don's family for all the care and kindness shown to him by many doctors and nurses at the Rockyview Hospital Coronary Care Unit. In living memory of Don Morrison, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park (Calgary Herald 25 Jan 2010)
