For Posterity's Sake A Royal Canadian Navy Historical Project
In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
FRY, Fitzgerald - It is with great sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Fitzgerald Fry, at his home, on April 19, 2020. Born in Halifax on November 17, 1924, Fitz was a son of Mary (Moreash) and Arthur Fry. He was the youngest of six boys. After returning from deployment with the Navy in 1945, he joined the Halifax Police Department in 1946. He moved through the ranks from constable, Detective, Inspector, Superintendent, Deputy Chief, and then Chief from 1978-84. He was the recipient of the Governor General's Police Exemplary Award in 1984, prior to his retirement. He was also a member of the Canadian Chiefs of Police Association. Above and beyond his remarkable career, his family was his pride and joy. He and his first wife, Goldie, of 51 years, raised three daughters in Halifax, and was then the proud "Grampy" of his grandchildren, and eventually "GG" to his great-grandchildren. Many memories were made at his first cottage on Mill Lake in Hubbards, and then his next one on Cockscombe Lake. Fitz had a gift for music, having self-taught himself to play guitar, piano, banjo and the organ, to name just a few! He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling (being a member of various leagues), and playing cards, and was the go-to person in the family for fixing and building just about anything. He loved the water, be it at the lake, or a beach in Prince Edward Island or Florida. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Marie (McNeil) Fry; his daughters, Marilyn Stockall (David), Burlington, Ont.; Elaine Bryant, Halifax; and Gloria Fry, Mount Uniacke; grandchildren, Dana Fergusson (Bart Leppan), Chris Stockall (Trish), Scott Bryant (Angie), Stephanie Cutaia (David), Allison Van Straaten (Dan), Lyndsay Hollett (Ben), and Terry Murphy; 15 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Jack Bryant; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Goldie in 1995; and brothers, Russell, Jim, Arthur, Ollie, and Everett. The family would like to thank Dr. Eddie Kinley for his care over the last 25 years, as well as Dr. Laurie Mallery, Nurse Practitioner Amanda Tinning, VON, and Tammy Lovett and the personal care workers from Home Instead Care for all of their support and services over the few months. Due to Covid restrictions, a private burial will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life to occur at a later date. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or charity of choice. Good-bye my family, my life is past, I loved you all to the very last. Weep not for me, but courage take, Love each other for my sake, For those you love don't go away, They walk beside you every day. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 23 Apr 2020)
