GALBRAITH, Bayard Emery - With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the death of Bayard Emery Galbraith, which occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital, on Saturday, July 26, 2014. Bayard was the eldest son of Arthur and Gladys (Breen) Galbraith, and was a life-long resident of Saint John, born on May 2, 1921 and raised on the West Side – a true West Sider. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Dorothy, their three children Sheila (Wayne – brother of Jeffrey) Davenport, David, and Hyla (Jeffrey - brother of Wayne) Davenport, six grandchildren Lesley (Jason) Brown, Erinn (Matthew) Thebeau, Kyle (Laura) Davenport, Emily (Justin) Davenport, Elizabeth (Alex) Davenport, Rebecca (Adam) Davenport, three beautiful great-grandsons, Nolan, Liam and Jack, and several nieces and nephews. Bayard was predeceased by his parents, his brother Bruce and sisters Ruth and Jean, and each of their spouses. Bayard was a strong family man, and devoted his life to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, providing a safe, and happy home in which all grew up with fond memories. Bayard was a veteran of the Second World War, serving aboard various ships as a Stoker Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy in various theatres of the naval war, including time in the Mediterranean, the North Atlantic, and on the Murmansk Run, for which he earned his Canadian War Service medals, and medals from the Russian Federation. Bayard worked before, and after the war for Murray and Gregory, where he learned his cabinet making skills, putting his hand to many examples at his home on Pugsley Avenue. He entered the Public Service in 1954, with Canada Post as a letter carrier, and retired as inside support staff with the post office in 1986. Bayard grew up in the United Church, attending Carleton United, Crescent Valley United, and upon merging with in 1970, at Portland United Church, where he sang for many years in the choir, and served on various boards. Bayard had a keen sense of the world around him, was an avid reader, enjoying especially books on ships and the sea. He enjoyed bowling with city leagues in his adult years, and in his youth he enjoyed basketball and tennis. Bayard found great pleasure in picking berries, and in preparing jams and jellies with Dorothy as a team. As a Galbraith, he found great interest in researching the genealogy of the clan with the Lorneville connection, and he compiled an extensive record tracing the family history.
