SYKES, Douglas Roderick McIvor - Age 88, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Hospital on January 2nd, 2014, after a brief illness. Born in Windsor, Ont., he was a son of the late Frederick and Hazel (Beckerson) Sykes. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Florine; his daughters, Elizabeth (Wayne) Duncan and Susan Shaw and son, Stephen (Brenda MacPherson); granddaughters, Dr. Emily Shaw (Dr. Peter Green), Stephanie Duncan and Keltie Duncan (Tim Purcell); grandsons, Douglas Shaw, Andrew and Geoffrey Sykes, and great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Maggie and Oliver Green, all of Halifax/Dartmouth. He will be missed by his canine buddies, Pepper, Poco and Molly. He was predeceased by his sister, Mabel; brothers, William and Donald, all of Windsor, Ont. and his daughter-in-law, Suzann (Foster) Sykes, Dartmouth. Dad joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and saw active duty in both the Second World War and the Korean War, retiring after proudly serving his country for close to 35 years. Following retirement Dad devoted his time to his family. Dad was also an avid fan of the Halifax Mooseheads, not missing a game until he to ok ill. Special thanks to Dr. John Banks who was Dad's family physician for several years and to Dr. Wayne MacLeod along with the staff of 6 East at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII, for the care and compassion shown to Dad and our family during his stay. Extra special thanks to Rev. Dr. Cynthia Chenard for the continual compassion and friendship shown to Dad and our family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 10th at 12:30 p.m. in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 216 School St., Dartmouth; Rev. Dr. P.A. 'Sandy' McDonald and Rev. Dr. Cynthia Chenard officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
