TOOLE, John Harold Vernon - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of J. H. Vernon Toole after a long and welllived life. Vern was born in Saint John, N.B. in 1925, a son of Flora Kathleen (Patterson) and Harold James Toole. He attended schools in Saint John, Moncton and Mount Allison Academy in Sackville, N.B. Vern served overseas in the Second World War on HMCS Algonquin, returning to reside in Halifax. He was a member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club, he loved to dance and did it well. He served there on the Board as Chairman of Entertainment. Vern spent over 42 years on the road working for numerous companies and building his own Manufactures Agency, J. H. Vernon Toole Limited, covering all of the Atlantic Region. He has maintained his naval connection as a Trustee of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, HMCS Sackville. Vern’s association with the Masonic Order has been a driving and valued force in his life. He was an active member of Keith Lodge No. 17, Scottish Rite and The Royal Order of Scotland. There he had offered leadership on many levels for 65 years. Vern was a very active member of Philae Temple, Potentate in 1972, Governor of the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Montreal and spent in excess of 20 years on the Imperial Committee for Endowments, Wills and Gifts. A member of the Anglican Church he had served from Choir Boy to Parish Council. For many years he had been a member of the Church of St. Paul in Halifax. Vern’s summer home at Indian Point, Mahone Bay, had been a joy for the past 40 years. There he became a part of the community and formed lasting friendships. Vernon gave new meaning to the phrase "reading the paper". He valued his friends and had many; he brought vision to any undertaking of which he was a part. Vern is survived by his wife, Jean "Peggy" (Smith); and their daughter, Kathleen "Kate". Funeral arrangements will be made at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to think of the QEII Health Sciences Center Foundation, the Philae Shriners Hospitals for Children, Montreal Unit or The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Learning Centre for Children.
