BROWN, Michael Leo - (27 March 1971 - 01 June 2020) It is with the heaviest of hearts the family announce the sudden passing of Michael "Brownie" Leo Brown, LS, CD. Tantallon, NS, after losing his battle to PSTD. 27 March 1971 - 01 June 2020 (49). Mike was born in Halifax and attended Sir John A MacDonald high school until he left to pursue his dream of joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1990 and serving on HMCS Vancouver, HMCS Fraser, HMCS Montreal, HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Windsor and HMCS Corner Brook. He was also a submariner, and Captain of his dive team. Mike participated in operations such as Sharp Guard, Operation Persistence (Swiss Air Crash), service in NATO (1995) and NATO (2000) before retiring in 2010 as a Leading Seaman. While serving his country he participated in a number of harrowing missions, and by the time he had retired, he considered himself to be a pacifist. His family is immensely proud off his twenty years of service and was well-loved by the people who served with him. His Stellar military career followed by a total renunciation for violence. Mike was passionate about environmentalism and concerned for the planet, his curiosity and desire to learn and understand everything he encountered was something we all admired. He was fundamentally non-religious but deeply spiritual and explored many religions before adopting Buddhism. Mike was truly a dog person, often referred to as the "Dog whisperer" and will be sadly missed by his best bud Koru. Mike was a lifelong son of Nova Scotia and also had many surrogate families of friends spread across the province and was actively engaged in a number of communities as a citizen with roots in Timberlea/Tantallon, North End Halifax, Dartmouth, the South Shore and the Tri-County area of Nova Scotia. Through this process, it has been touching and overwhelming to learn of the many lives Mike touched and imprinted on being an active and lifelong citizen of Nova Scotia. He was well loved and respected by all his friends, the "Clyde street crew" and his family. Mike is survived by his brother Kevin Brown (Lisa Megeney) Lakeside, his nephew Jaziah, his chosen Nieces Annika, Lorien, Vivian and Zofia Robertson and his chosen nephews Izaak and Gabriel Croft. Cremation has taken place, and a full military service will be announced at a later date, pending Covid-19 restriction. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Last Post Fund and Paws Fur Thought - a volunteer driven initiative that advocates and raises funds to pair PTSD service dogs with veterans.
