They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
MIRON-MORIN, Maxime, Capt., RCAF, killed - 29 Apr 2020, HMCS FREDERICTON - died when the CH-148 Cyclone from HMCS FREDERICTON crashed into the Ionian Sea approx 80 km off the coast of Greece on 29 Apr 2020.
Capt. Maxime Miron-Morin, an air combat systems officer originally from Trois-Rivieres, Que., was lost on April 29 when the CH-148 Cyclone assigned to HMCS Fredericton went down in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece. The ship was taking part in NATO's Operation Reassurance. “Max was a genuine and patient soul; his authenticity and approachable demeanour instantly drew people to him,” his wife Kathryn wrote. “He had the time of day and then some for every person who crossed his path and was ready to help in any situation without hesitation. Life was instantly better with Max around — with his infectious smile, bright eyes, and playful manner you could not help but smile along with him.” She described her husband as a superb athlete, game player, and outdoor enthusiast with unmatched research skills and curiosity. He was a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering and earned a master of science in oceanography from Dalhousie University. Maxime's mother, Marie-Claude, wrote that her 29-year-old son, the oldest of five children, loved spreading joy and happiness. He and Kathryn were based in Halifax for the past six years, she wrote, adding that he was happy to be going on the Mediterranean mission. “Maxime would have celebrated 12 years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces this summer,” Marie-Claude wrote. “I am proud of the man he became. He had the opportunity to do what he wanted to do most in the world, fly. He left us, surrounded by his second family, in the esprit de corps that makes fighters so tight knit. “I love you so much Maxime, I could never forget you. You will always have a special place in my heart and my mind. Watch over us, your brothers and your sister, Kathryn and her family, all of our family, as well as your friends. “Have a good trip beautiful man! We will always, always remember you!” Jean Morin, Maxime's father wrote that he died as he lived, doing what he loved; “travelling, being outdoors, having fun, being part of a family with the same interests and helping those in need.” The family also extended “unconditional love and support” to the families of the others lost in the accident: Capt. Brenden MacDonald, Capt. Kevin Hagen, Master Cpl. Matthew Cousins, Sub-Lt. Matthew Pyke and Sub-Lt. Abbigail Cowbrough.
