In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
HURWITZ, Harry - Peacefully, on Sunday, October 18, 2020, in his one-hundredth year. Loving husband of the late Libby Kahane for fifty-two years. Cherished father and father-in-law of Debbie and Marty Cooper, Darla and Ian Scott and the late Della Hurwitz. Adored Zaidie of Jonathan Kizner and Lucy McCoubrey, Michael Kizner and Danielle Chafetz, Ariel Scott, Adam Scott, Harley Cooper and Kristina Seil, Casey Cooper and Eric Evdosin. Doting great-grandfather of Jonah Kizner, Mia and Zoe Evdosin. Son of the late Bella and the late Chaim Hurwitz. Predeceased by his 12 brothers and sisters; brother-in law of Lillie Kahane, Dyan Kahane and Rosanne Kahane. Born October 1, 1921 in Lachine, the 10th of 13 children, Harry was a Golden Gloves boxer and like all the Hurwitz men, loved to play hockey. He grew up during the Great Depression and in 1940, at the age of 18, enlisted first in the army then switched to the navy and served aboard the HMCS ATHABASKAN and spent the last year of the war as a POW in Germany. Harry returned to Canada “the best country in the world” and later married his beloved Libby. He was a hard worker and a devoted family man who never complained, never took anything for granted, found beauty in the simplest things, and had joie de vivre. A remarkable man, a kind and funny man and master storyteller, he will be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews, and friends. A hero to his family, to know him was to love him. In keeping with our dad’s wishes, remember to honour our Veterans. A special thank you to Jean Gallagher and his wife Pamela Segal, to Dr. Richer and the incredible staff of 14S at Ste Anne’s Hospital. A private graveside service will take place. Ships served in: HMCS ATHABASKAN - Survived the sinking of HMCS ATHABASKAN. Rescued / captured by German forces and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.
