At the end of the war, he transferred to the Canadian Navy. After completing service, he operated a business in Halifax, Bob's Burner Service. Some 20 years ago, he moved to Toronto where he resided until his death. A.B. Robert Langthorne R.N. returned to Halifax after spending the Christmas holidays with his parents. While he was home there were two parties held in his honor. He received many lovely gifts including about $50. in money. He spent three years in the British Navy, where he had many thrilling adventures. He was a survivor from two ships, the first time adrift on a raft for 20 hours with eleven others and the last time for four days with six others. We all wish him a Happy New Year and the very best of luck. (The Lunenburg Progress Enterprise, Wed, Dec. 30th, 1942, pg Four / Researched by George Newbury)
Webmaster's note: According to their Marriage Registration, Robert married Betty Jeanette Levy on 26 Jul 1943 in Halifax, NS. On the registration, Robert is listed as age 21 and an Able Seaman in the RCNR (Royal Canadian Naval Reserve). It is believed the information in the obituary is in error and that Robert joined the RCNR, not the British Royal Navy, after his discharge from the RCR. This error may be a result of the fact that many sailors in the RCN, RCNR and RCNVR served in ships of the Royal Navy during the war, but were members of the Canadian Navy, not the Royal Navy.
