In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BURKE, Vernon Robert Eugene - Our beloved father and friend passed away peacefully on July 11, 2017, at Cassellhome Nursing Home, North Bay at the of 91 years. He was the son of Dora and William Burke of Mattawa. He moved to North bay as a young lad, went to Scollard Hall until enlisting in the Navy during WW11 at the age of 17. Vern is survived by his wife of 70 years, Claire, and four children: Daniel (Ruth), Robert, Suzanne (Eugene) and Patricia (Mike). Proud grandfather of Damien, Christian, Scott, Danielle, Brianne, Eugene and Riley. Vern was right ‘chuffed’ about the arrival of his great-grandson, Gage. Dad was an active member of the Englehart community: ONR employee; Town Council, Catholic Church/School Board; Credit Union; sports coach. He was a devoted to the Royal Canadian Legion, serving in many capacities: builder, leader, public speaking, track and field, pipe band and “Kit Bag” newsletter – to mention a few. Dad received awards and recognition locally, provincially and federally for his endeavours. He led by example and our lives are richer for his love, affection and sense of humour. Funeral services will be privately held. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society and Diabetes Foundation. The family wish to thank the Nurses and Staff of Cassellholme for the care and their devotion towards Vernon.
