LIVINGSTON, C. Bruce - Age 93, has passed from this life on September 28, 2020 in East Lawrencetown, NS, with family by his side.
Born in Leamington, Ontario and raised in southern Ontario, he was the eldest son of the late Percy and Julia Livingston. Bruce is survived by his daughters, Barbara and Raymond Victor, Nova Scotia; Patricia Livingston, Alberta; his brothers, Murray and Lorraine Livingston, Ontario; Robert (Lucy Hagen) Livingston, Ontario; nine grand-children; 21 great-grand-children; and one great great-grandson; his in-laws, Jean Salway, Ontario; Douglas (Roy) and Jeanne Stevenson, Manitoba; Eloise Stevenson, Ontario; Gail and John Ashby, Ontario; Jim and Ruth Stevenson, New Brunswick; Jack and Heather Stevenson, Alberta; brother-in-law, Nick Biljetina, Ontario.
Bruce was pre-deceased by his wife Shirley just last month on August 6th, 2020; his son, James Livingston (Dale Dostaler); his daughter, Marilyn Mattson; his sister, Betty and Henry Boterberg, his brothers Kenneth Livingston and Ross (Pat Melmine-Livingston) and sister-in-law, Lenore Livingston; his mother and father in-law, Lillian (Chattington) and Robert Stevenson, his other in-laws, Audrey and Floyd Fitzgerald, June and Robert Lewis, Lillian Stevenson (in infancy), Marlene Stevenson, Kirk Biljetina and Harry Salway.
Bruce was a WW2 Veteran having served as a gunner on the Minesweeper HMCS Vegreville J257 in the English Channel. He married Shirley Stevenson in 1946 and spent a few years farming in southern Ontario, then re-joined the Navy and moved with his family to Shearwater, Nova Scotia in 1954. He transferred to the Air Base at Patricia Bay, Sidney, BC in 1963 and during the next two years he fell in love with the mountains, the fishing and the hunting on Vancouver Island.
He and Shirley returned to Sidney in 1969 on his retirement from the CAF. They lived the next 19 years in various towns of British Columbia (Sidney, Ladysmith, Abbotsford, Kamloops) while Bruce worked for small airplane Companies. He also flew several years in Avenger aircraft for the annual bud-worming in New Brunswick where he would often run into ex-military acquaintances.
Eventually, Bruce began working for a boat building company in Sidney where he stayed until he retired in 1992. He and Shirley had settled in Sooke, B.C. in 1988 where they would live for the next 30 years.
Bruce was truly a jack of all trades - he could turn his hand to any task and build whatever he set his mind to make. He was a perfectionist in every aspect of his work and play, as was evidenced by every project he ever undertook - including his wine-making. He delighted in taking family (especially his grand-children and great-grandchildren) and his friends fishing for salmon in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and took so much pride in his home and gardens.
Bruce will be missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful caregivers who helped care for Bruce during the past two years in Nova Scotia and for the two previous years in British Columbia, enabling him to remain at home with his wife and family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, with Celebration of Life be held on October 16, 2020 at 2:30 PM in the funeral home chapel and will be in consideration of regulations related to COVID-19 requirements.
Cremation has taken place and family interment in Sooke Cemetery, British Columbia, will occur at a future date where Bruce will rest beside his daughter Marilyn and his wife Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 02 Oct 2020)
