In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MacDONALD, Angus Lewis, QC - 89 of Halifax and River John, passed away August 10, 2015 in Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Halifax, N.S., he was the son of the late Honourable Angus L. Macdonald (Premier of Nova Scotia for a total of 15 years) and the late Doctor (Hon.) Agnes (Foley) Macdonald. Following graduation from St Patrick's High School in Ottawa, Ontario, he enlisted in the RCNVR serving at shore bases and at sea. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1946, he entered Dalhousie University and graduated from the Law School in 1951. He articled with the late Honourable H.P. MacKeen, QC. Upon his admission to the Bar of Nova Scotia, he joined the law firm now known as Stewart McKelvey Stirling Scales where he practiced, primarily as a trial lawyer, until his appointment to the appellate Court of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1973. He retired from the Court in 1992 and subsequently became Counsel to the law firm known as Joel C. Pink, QC & Associates retiring once again in 2001. He was appointed Queen's Council in 1968 and lectured for many years at the Dalhousie Law School. He was a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the NS Barrister's Society. He was the first chairman of the Review Board created under the provisions of the Criminal Code to review dispositions concerning any accused person who was a subject of a mental disorder verdict. He was a long-time member of the Medical/Legal Society of Nova Scotia and for over a decade an advisor to the Law Reform Commission of Canada. He was a member of the Halifax Club and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brule, Nova Scotia. His wife, Evelyn (Walker), and sisters, Eileen Macdonald and Coline Dorsey predeceased him. He is survived by his stepchildren, Mrs. Judith Gard (William), Karin Morgan, both of Lower Sackville; LCol (Retired) Wayne DeWolfe (Diane), Alfred, Ont.; sister, Oonagh Magrath (Neil), Mississauga, Ont.; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins; brother-in-law, Laurence Dorsey. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 18 in St. Thomas Aquinas Canadian Martyrs Parish, 5900 Inglis St., Halifax. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Family flowers only. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
