LAKE, Merton W. - 1916 - 2014. The family announces with sorrow the passing of Merton, at the Golden Manor, after 97 years of living in his beloved Timmins. Mert was born in Timmins in 1916 to Porcupine Camp pioneers George and Mabel Lake. The eldest of their six children, he was followed by the late Ron (Billie), the late Jack (Joyce), Larry (Gwen), and his twin sisters Gwen (Doug) and the late Kathleen (Peter). Mert is survived by Norah, his wife of 65 years, and his children John (Albarosa), Loran Charbonneau (the late Ron) and Jeffrey. Also survived by his grandchildren Jonathan (Tamara), Amber (Lucas), Adam, Morgan (Angela) and Kathryn (Shane) and his great grandchild, Ethan. During World War 2, Mert was a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in the North Atlantic aboard the HMCS Levis as a Gunnery Officer with Escort Group 27. Merton was the President and owner of Porcupine Advance Printers Ltd from 1946 to 1996. Always active in his community, Mert was a Past President of the Timmins Ski Club, a Past President of the Timmins Lions Club, a Founding Member, Past President and Life Member of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce, a Founding Member of Spruce Needles Golf Club, a member of the City of Timmins Committee of Adjustment for 29 years, a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System for over 40 years, a Life Member of the Kamiskotia Ski Club and a Life Member of the Porcupine Dante Club. Mert was an avid gardener as evidenced by his beautiful gardens at his home on MacDonald Hill. With Norah, he enjoyed both cross-country and downhill skiing, bicycling, canoeing, hiking, travelling, Tai Chi and golfing. Mert took real pleasure in exploring the woods and waterways of the local area and sharing this enthusiasm with his friends. Later in life, Mert's Coffee Club friends were very dear to him. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at the Golden Manor for their tender loving care. Mert lived life to the fullest and believed, as the song by Louis Armstrong conveys, What a Wonderful World we live in. A celebration of Mert's life will take place on Friday May 16, from 12 pm to 3 pm, at the Stephens Lessard Funeral Home Reception Centre. Instead of flowers, donations to the Kamiskotia Ski Patrol, 132 Oneida Cres, Timmins, Ontario P4N 7Y1, would be appreciated.12762268
