VANDORPE, Romain Henry (Van) - 75, Dartmouth, died January 13, 2005, in Dartmouth General Hospital in the presence of his loving wife, Susan, and his five sons, David, Robert, James, Joseph, and Anthony. He was predeceased by his son, Michael, and is survived by his brother, Andre and his sister, Marguerite. Born in Izegem, Belgium on February 2, 1929, he attended technical school in Izegem and joined the Belgian navy before emigrating to Canada in 1952. Briefly employed as a machinist at Fairey Aviation, Mr. Vandorpe enlisted in the Canadian Army (3rd Canadian Guards), then transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy to pursue a 32 year career in the engine rooms of many Canadian warships, including the Bonnie and HMCS Nipigon. In 1964, Mr. Vandorpe undertook officer training at Royal Roads Military College and at the time of his retirement he was commander of the Fleet Damage Control School. Mr. Vandorpe was also an avid canoeist, a long-time member of the Micmac Amateur Aquatic Club, and often enjoyed plying the waters of Kejimikujik National Park. Romain was a loving grandfather and will be missed by his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nicola, Matthew, Jessica, Christopher, Lauren and Sarah. The family would like to thank the staff of 3 East, Dartmouth General Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Society of Canada, Maritime Region. Visitation will be 6:30-9:30 p.m. today in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 15, in St. Clement's Church, Gaston Road, Dartmouth, and led by Pastor Joseph Hattie. (The Halifax Herald 14 Jan 2005)
