In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
MacKINNON, Patrick - It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Patrick MacKinnon (91) who passed away peacefully on November 8, 2020. Patrick was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia on February 17, 1929. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in his youth as an ordinary seaman and in 1947 was sent to HMCS NADEN in Victoria, B.C. for his basic training. During is time in the Navy, he served on many ships and shore establishments among these were STADACONA, HMCS LLEWELLYN, HMCS HURON, HMCS ALGONQUIN, HMCS PROVIDER and HMCS BONAVENTURE. He was a good rifle shot and won trophies in the navy as well as shooting at Connaught Rifle Range in Ottawa as a member of the Nova Scotia team. He was commissioned from the ranks during his career with the Navy and retired after integration as a Captain CAF in the Logistics Supply Branch. In his final three years with the Navy he was fortunate to be appointed as Logistics Officer to CFS BERMUDA. Since CFS BERMUDA was a communication station he got into the spirit of things and became a licensed, amateur radio operator (call sign VP9JJ in Bermuda then later VE7AVI when he lived in B.C.) He used to tell us that his heel marks are still in the Bermuda tarmac as he and his family were dragged off that beautiful island to return to Halifax in 1979. During his time in the navy and after he retired, he found time on weekends and on leave to return to university studies to attain a B. Comm. from St. Mary’s University in 1984. On retirement from the Navy he worked in materiel management in the Halifax Shipyard for two years, then the Grace Maternity and finally the Izaak Walton Killam Hospitals. He also volunteered as an English-as-a-Second-Language instructor and was also proud of the fact that he made time to donate some 80 units of blood to the Canadian Red Cross. He was one of the first members of Mensa Canada and was an addict of cryptic crosswords and letters to the editor. The year of his final retirement he moved to the city he fell in love with during his basic training--Victoria, B.C. and lived there for 22 happy years. While there, he was an active volunteer at the Royal BC Museum as a guide for their periodic exhibits. Patrick then returned home to Halifax in 2016 to spend his final years with his family. Patrick was predeceased by his wife, Audrey (of over 30 years) and his beloved sisters, Florence Michaud, Grace Kendziora and Marjorie Lichterman. He leaves behind his sister, Kaye Kendziora, dear friend Catherine Parker, and his children Michael MacKinnon (Karen Penny), Nancy (John) Cassels, Peter MacKinnon, Victoria (Ross) Bruce, and his grandchild Mykal MacKinnon (Robert Clark) and great grand children Aurora and Harlow. We would like to extend a heart-felt thank you from Patrick to the Bedford Berkeley staff who took great care of Patrick and gave him 2 years of worry-free living and to the staff of Unit 8.4 at the Halifax Infirmary who made his last days as comfortable as possible. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Saturday November 14, 2020 beginning at 3:00pm followed by a memorial service at 4:00pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive Halifax. His family would have loved to celebrate his life with all those who knew him or his family, however, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, space will be limited, masks are required and you are reminded to respect social distancing. A private family interment will be held at St. John’s Cemetery, Strathlorne, NS, where he will be put to rest with his parents and sisters.
