In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
DIAMOND, Anita Hatfield (née PLUMMER) - 85, Halifax, died suddenly August 2, 2003, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She was the fifth daughter of a family of seven, children of Greta E. (Finley) and A. Gordon Plummer. Born in Vancouver, B.C., the family moved back to Saint John, N.B., when Anita was just six months of age. She grew up in a loving family, spending many happy summer hours in both Ingleside and Sand Point along the Saint John River. Anita graduated from Saint John High School, then Saint John Vocational School with a secretarial diploma. She was known for her strong work ethic and practiced her art diligently with Lawson Motors, Saint John and TCA (Trans Canada Airlines), Saint John and Halifax, before joining the WRCNS (Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service) serving from 1943-1945. In later years, she worked at the New Brunswick Museum, Saint John and the Art Gallery of Dalhousie University, Halifax. Anita was an avid sportswoman, enjoying swimming, diving, skiing, skating and in later years, curling. One of her fondest memories was scoring an "8-ender" as a skip on her birthday in the 1970s. She was also an accomplished bridge player and her competitive spirit enjoyed a good game of scrabble with her four sisters. Twenty two enjoyable retirement years were spent in East LaHave, before declining health necessitated a move back to Halifax. Anita will be dearly missed by her husband of 55 years, Philip; her daughters, Jane Welch (Jim Whittaker), Halifax; Margie (Harold) Britten, Hubbards; grandchildren, Andrew Welch, Toronto; Sarah Welch, Alabama; Heather, Diana and Peter Britten, Hubbards; sisters, Gene Moore, Fredericton; Phyllis Thompson, Saint John; brothers, Arthur Plummer, Halifax; David Plummer, Marietta, Georgia. Anita was predeceased by grandson, Jeffrey Welch (1982), and granddaughter, Jennifer Britten (1985); sisters, Margaret Nielsen (2000), and Ruth Church (1971). Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax. Memorial service to be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 6, in the Chapel at Snow's followed by a reception. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Anita's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, IWK Health Centre Foundation or the charity of your choice. Special thanks to the staff of V6E and V5E at the VMB for their loving and tender care over the past two years.
