In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
SEMELUK, Marion Elizabeth (née SHAW) - of Fredericton, NB, passed away peacefully at the Veterans Health Unit on May 3, 2005, following an eight year struggle with Vascular Dementia, with her daughter by her side. Born in Camrose, AB, on October 31, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Dunn) Shaw and the wife of George Semeluk. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. After completing her public schooling in Camrose, at the age of 19, Marion joined the WRCNS, and from 1943 to 1945 she was stationed in Newfoundland as a Sick Berth Attendant. Finding this work very much to her liking, Marion decide to undertake nurses' training at the General Hospital in Edmonton AB following the war. Marion had the opportunity to nurse in many places such as Chicago, Cleveland, Tulsa, and Cambridge, England where she ended her career after the birth of their first child. Following the arrival of their children, Marion dedicated most of her efforts to her family although she willingly helped others in many different ways. She also belonged to a variety of organizations, which were generally geared toward improving the lives of others. Following her husband's retirement in 1989, Marion and George spent many winters in Arizona as well as took trips to such places as Britain, China, Hawaii, Japan, the USSR, Egypt, Morocco, Greece, Turkey, Cuba, and Mexico which she thoroughly enjoyed and enriched her life. Marion has always been a devoted wife to her loving husband, of 56 years, George; and loving mother to her three children, William (Brigita) of Oakville, ON, Michael of Edmonton, AB; and daughter Catherine Semeluk-Brown (Gary) of Fredericton, NB. She always spent much time and showered with love, her precious grandchildren, Olaf Rubis, and Erica and Ryan Brown all of Fredericton, whom she adored. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by her family as well as her special and devoted caregivers, Brenda Mosley and Racheal Hamilton, who made it possible for Marion to remain at home until the last two months of her life. Predeceased by her parents, brothers, Michael, Wilfred, Leo and David; one sister, Gertrude. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 7th, 2005 from 6-9 pm at the home of Catherine Semeluk-Brown 6 Bromley Avenue, Hanwell, NB. For those who wish, memorial tributes may be made to the Veterans Health Unit, the Alzheimer's Society, or the charity of the donor's choice.
