In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
CRAMM, Joseph - was the son of George and Bernett Cramm. He was born on October 12 1889 at Hatchet Cove, NL. He signed his application for enlistment with the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve during March of 1911 and completed 112 days of training before the outbreak of the Great War. Both Joseph and his brother, James, responded to the Royal Proclamation in August 1914 and reported for duty at HMS Calypso, St. John's, NL.
Joseph was deployed to the Royal Canadian Navy and assigned to the HMCS NIOBE. He sustained a serious injury to his left knee three weeks later in a fall from the riggings of the ship. According to his naval records, the accident left him unfit for naval service. He was sent home on November 5, 1914. He married Emelina Benson of St. Jones Within, NL., and settled down with his family. He moved to Goobies, NL., where he passed away on March 25, 1942 and was buried at the Pentecostal Cemetery, Goobies.
Ships served in: HMCS NIOBE - Served in Niobe 16 Oct 1914 - 05 Nov 1914. James injured his knee while serving in NIOBE. Deemed unfit for further service, he was discharged from the navy.
