In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
COCHRANE, John Farquhar - It is with love and rich memories that we announce the passing of our dad, grandpa and great-grandpa on November 27, 2020, as a result of Covid-19. We grieve our loss, but are grateful his life ended with dignity and compassion thanks to the caring staff at Park Manor Care Home.
Those left to remember Dad's love include his wife Joyce; son Randy (Sharon); daughters, Shirley Gibb (Terence Gibb) and Laurie (Raymond) Chudley; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren; Joyce's children, Blaine (Gail), Bruce (Evelyn) and Cheryl (Stan Marco) and families; and brothers, Ernie (Sylvia) and Harvey (Charla).
Dad was born August 18, 1926, the oldest of five boys. He was raised on the family farm near Brock, SK, and completed Grades 1 to 10 in a one-room schoolhouse. Dad's career with the Canadian National Railway began in 1943, but was temporarily suspended when he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944. Dad's CNR career spanned 43 years, and he held many positions until retiring as a well-respected Employee Relations Officer.
Dad was the ultimate handyman and volunteer. He built the family home on Ravelston Avenue, helped build the Transcona Memorial United Church, and was Johnnie-on-the-spot whenever anyone needed a hand. His volunteerism varied from tying up youngsters' skates at the Pirates rink, to delivering Meals on Wheels, to being Sunday School superintendent.
In 1970 Mom and Dad bought their Caddy Lake cottage, and the good times moved in. Dad set the bar high, water-skiing until he was 75, and catching a great Northern Pike which has yet to be out-caught. Fifty years later, their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids are still making great memories.
Dad enjoyed a good laugh, often at his own expense. He and Mom had a wide circle of friends with whom they enjoyed square dancing, bowling, whist, canasta, and extensive travels.
Above everything else, Dad treasured his family both near and far. He liked nothing better than to soak up the vibes whenever we gathered. Life is not composed of a few large accomplishments, but rather many small tasks. Dad accomplished those with a positive attitude, unyielding faith, and an abundance of patience and integrity. Dad's example will forever be an inspiration, and it will be his lasting legacy.
