In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
GREEN, Eldred - was born on June 13, 1898, to Jasper and Martha Green of St. Jones Without. He signed his attestation papers with the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve on April 19, 1917. He was immediately transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and arrived at Halifax days before the Halifax Explosion. He assisted in the clean-up of debris that strewn over the city and had witnesses the atrocities resulting from explosives. On December 21, 918 he returned to HMS Briton and was demobilized.
He returned to St. Jones Without and married Millie Coates of Winterton on January 9, 1919. In 1926 tragedy struck the family with the sudden death of their daughter, Annie. They then moved their family to Winterton where he operated a small family store. He passed away in1974.
