In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
BUTLER, Gerald Mcdonald (Gerry) - passed away peacefully after a brief illness, just five months after the passing of his sweetheart of 74 years, Ruth (Pike). Born in St. John's, N.L., to Hector and Gwendoline Butler, Dad made his way to Halifax to join the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949. It is here that he put down roots with mom and raised the family of which he was enormously proud. After 25 years of service, he retired from the Navy and joined Sears, managing the facilities of the Halifax store until his second retirement. Not one to be idle, Dad did not rest there. He was an avid golfer, maintained what was arguably the most immaculate garden in "Birdland" and devoted much time to his family, friends, and Rockingham United Church. Dad was a tenor in the church choirs, a member of The John B Band and the Men's Group. He was especially passionate about his work with the Pastoral Care Team. He visited countless people in their homes and at their bedsides, providing comfort and prayer. His friends describe him as a most entertaining, funny, big-hearted curmudgeon. No one could tell a joke, relate a story, or entertain a crowd like Dad. Dad was many things to many people but most important of all he was a devoted husband, father, grampy and great-grampy. He was unwavering in his love and pride of his family. He provided advice when we needed it (not always when we wanted it!) and supported our decisions even when the choices we made were not the ones he hoped for. Dad taught us about love and life and how to treat people with kindness and compassion. He also taught us to stand by our convictions and what we believed in. We owe him so much. Gerry is survived by daughter, Pamela Collier (Chris); son, Paul Butler (Molly); granddaughters, Malorie Stoddard (Adam), Melissa MacPhail (Ian); and great-granddaughters, Peyton and Carlee. He is also survived by brother, David (Bonnie); sister-in-law, Anne; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents; stepmother, Bertha; brothers, Hector (Isla), Max (Olive), Ray; and sister, Elizabeth (Art). Arrangements are under the care of Atlantic Funeral Home, Halifax. Cremation has taken place. Memorial and interment services will be held at a later date. Our gratitude to those who cared for Dad during his brief illness including the staff of the QEII Health Sciences Centre Emergency Department and the team on 8.2. He could not have been in better hands. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dad's memory will be gratefully accepted by Rockingham United Church, Brunswick Street Mission, or a charity of your choice. Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation.
