STARK, Horace Garner, Tel, V6408, RCNVR, MPK - 22 Oct 1940, HMCS MARGAREE - Son of James S. and Laura B. Stark, of Carleton Place, ON. Brother of Bevis Stark.
Horace Garner Stark joined the RCNVR at Ottawa in September, 1939. He was born at Finch, Ontario, on March 19, 1920, and was lost on October 22, 1940 while on duty aboard HMCS MARGAREE when that vessel collided with another vessel M.V. Port Fairy in the North Atlantic Ocean. Telegraphist Stark was educated first at Finch Public School, and later Carleton Place Public and High School, obtaining his Honor Matriculation and later at the Canadian Electronics Institute. Immediately after his enlistment he was assigned to duty at an Eastern Canadian Port. He joined the HMCS FRASER, which was sunk in June, 1940, off the Bordeaux Coast of France, but luckily escaped. Telegraphist Stark was an accomplished pianist, and had played over the C.B.C. in naval Musicales from Halifax. He was unmarried and is survived by his parents at Carleton Place, where he formerly made his home.
