Frank Harold Gawthorne

GAWTHORNE, Frank Harold - Born in Edmonton, Alberta, to Alfred and Ivy Gawthorne on Nov. 26, 1924. Frank grew up in Canada playing hockey with his friends and his sisters, Lily, Viola and Pearl. He joined the Royal Canadian Army at the age of 16, but after a year was discharged for being too young and went back home. After about a year of doing odd jobs he joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17, where he remained until the end of the war.

 

After returning home he went to work for the Canadian National Railroad in Edmonton. He met, fell in love with and married Betty Jean Weiss on Dec. 24, 1946. After moving to the United States he ended up settling down in Portland where he worked for the Portland Terminal Railroad until he retired.

 

He loved to play with his dog, watch hockey, fish, clip coupons, play with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

He passed away at the age of 83 at 6:46 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at home with his family at his bedside. He was a great Man, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother and friend. He will be dearly missed and loved forever.

 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Gawthorne; daughters, Laura Arnett, Maureen Heald, Deborah Davis and Miriam Williams; sons, Frank Gawthorne and Raymond Gawthorne; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Viola Northup.
