Died: 30 Jan 2021, Victoria, British Columbia

 

LESIUK, Dmeytro (Les) - It is with heavy hearts we share the news of the death of Chief Petty Officer First Class Dmeytro Lesiuk. Les died at the age of 86 on January 30, 2021. Born in Grandview, MB on September 8, 1934, his family moved to Kamsack, SK where he attended school. First employed as a telegraphist for CNR from 1952 to 1954, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy & proudly served his country for 35 years. Les enjoyed a distinguished career, retiring in September 1989 in Victoria, BC. Les took communication courses in STADACONA & CORNWALLIS, specialist courses in St Petersburg, FL, Rock Chester, NY, Malabar, England & Toronto, ON. He served on many HMCS ships on both the East & West coasts. His career highlights include: served as part of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic on HMCS FRASER; Installation of all HF, UHF Communications equipment while head of the Department of FMG from 1976 to 1979; Destroyer Life Extension (DELEX) training coordinator for both East and West personnel; Appointed Chief & Petty Officers Mess President 1984 to 1985 & 1987 to 1989. His proudest accomplishment was submitting statements of requirements for the present mess building which was approved by NDHQ & consulted with architects for design features. He served as coxswain on HMCS SASKATCHEWAN & he was appointed as Member of Order of Military Merit by Governor-general Madame Jeanne Sauvé. Les & his wife Joy spent many summers at Weirs Beach fishing for cod, salmon & crab where his children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews are left with many fond memories. Les was predeceased by his beloved wife Jocelyn in 2010; his parents John & Nelly. He is survived by his children Derek (Shellie), Leslie (Mike); bonus children Gail (Paul), Wendy (Jerry), Wayne (Gloria), Cameron & Wanda (d Brock); siblings Walter (d Helen) & Doris (d Russell); grandkids & great-grandkids. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing nurses & healthcare staff on 5 South at the Jubilee Hospital. A special thanks to Dr. Delang, Dr G. Mander & Dr. Otto. Everyone was amazing & caring to our family. Services for Les will be held in early May. (Victoria Times Colonist 17 Mar 2021)
