In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
ADDERSON, John W. - We are saddened to announce that at the age of 91, dad has "rung off the main engines and crossed the bar." Dad passed away on April 28, 2021, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Doris (Wilson). He is survived by his sister, Gwen Edwards in Calgary, Alta.; brother-in-law, Jack Wilson of Sidney, B.C.; his children, Mary, Carol, Jim (Donna), Maureen, Tom (Tracy); his grandchildren, Mark (Dayle), Amanda, Kelly (George), Victoria (Matty), Christian, Alexandra (Evan), Patrick (Kyle), Ryan and Michael, all of Dartmouth. Dad was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dad was born on April 18, 1930, to Arthur and Etta (Saunders) Adderson in Winnipeg, Man. Dad joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in 1948. Throughout his career, he served on many ships on both coasts-most notably on HMCS Crusader during the Korean War. He rose through the ranks from OSER to LCdr retiring from the RCN in 1981. He then moved to Supply and Services Canada as a Contract Administrator Marine & Industrial Procurement Division, finally retiring in 1994. Upon retirement, Dad joined the Maritime Ship Modelers Guild where he was the treasurer for many years. His model of the HMS Victory was displayed at Nova Scotia Crystal during one of the Tall Ships Festivals. Dad also enjoyed his weekly Friday lunches at Doolittle's Pub with "the boys" solving the BIG problems of the world. These Friday get-togethers were one of the great joys of his life. In the last few years of his life, Dad returned to his love of the sea by cruising with his travel companion, Barbara. Dad's wit, charm, and love of people will be missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Salvation Army, Brigadoon Village, or a charity of your choice. Thank you to the staff of the ER, ICU, and 5 East at Dartmouth General Hospital for your kindness and care of Dad. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no ceremony will be held. Ashes will be interred to the sea at a later date. Raise a tot to celebrate a life well lived. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald 01 May 2021)
