RAIT, John Atkinson (Jack) - With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of John Atkinson Rait "Jack" in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII on March 26, 2021 just as the sun was rising. He was a sweet man known for his easygoing nature and big hugs. Jack will be forever missed by his loving wife and sidekick Sue. Lovingly remembered by his favourite son, Russell; and favourite daughter, Kathy (Brian). He had the best grandchildren ever, Kevin, Jessica (Wyatt and great-granddaughter Cassidy), Anthony (Brittany and great-granddaughter Claire); his baby sister, Florence Yunik, way out there in British Columbia, is also remembering good times. Jack was born in Winnipeg in 1936. Deciding the winters were too cold he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954. As a medical assistant, he served as "the Doc" on ships on both coasts. "Doc" loved his gimballed bunk in sick bay. He retired in 1978. As the years passed, he often commented that he had collected his pension longer than he served. Being a true Scot he took great pleasure in that. He began his civilian career as the first administrator at The Birches in Musquodoboit Harbour. He worked at other LTC facilities over the years but The Birches was always his favourite career choice. His retirement years were spent on the road driving his sweetie Sue wherever she wanted to go. The births of grandchildren, graduations of all kinds and weddings were all special trips. Many miles were put on the car going to provincial golf tournaments to officiate or play as a couple. Once Sue retired, the car was pointed toward Florida each winter during Snowbird season. Jack has been cremated. Once we can travel, we will have a family celebration of his life as we lay him to rest beside his in-laws in London, Ont. He could do no wrong in the eyes of his mother-in-law and all three of her daughters knew she liked him best. Stupid COVID-19 will not let us get together as we would like so please think of him on the golf course and smile. A donation to Nova Scotia Golf Association, Junior golf in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
