In memory of those who have Crossed the Bar
WEIR, Jack Barnum - RCNVR; Optometrist (retired). Passed away peacefully at the Montfort Hospital, Ottawa, on May 10, 2021. Jack was predeceased by his first wife Barbara Ann (Browne) and his second wife Margaret (Statham). He is survived by his three sons Russell (Rose) Ottawa, Stephen (Maria) Toronto, and Bruce (Cynthia) Kanata; his seven grandchildren Elizabeth, Ryan, Mark, Allison, Mathew, Michael, and Andrew; as well as five great-grandchildren Alexander, Bailey, Charley, Raine and Lucas.
Jack served in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in the Second World War on HMCS PRINCE RUPERT on convoy duty in the Atlantic. He met Barbara at Red Pine Camp in Golden Lake and fell in love only to find out that they lived two blocks away from each other in Ottawa.
Jack graduated from The Ontario College of Optometry at U of Toronto and received his Doctor of Optometry from the University of Waterloo. His first practice was in Sarnia and after a brief stint in Windsor, the family moved to Ottawa where Jack was the optometrist at the Simpson Sears in the Carlingwood Shopping Centre.
Jack partnered with Vernon Prentice in 1965, (Prentice and Weir Optometrists) and practiced in Renfrew for 10 years, before settling in Eganville (Jack B. Weir Optometrist) and moving to nearby Lake Clear. Jack and Barb were very active in their community and volunteered with many organizations such as the Lake Clear Property Owners Association, Sebastapol Development Corporation, Sebastopol Township Recreation Committee and The Canadian Cancer Society.
After Barb's death, Jack met Margaret Statham in Portugal. They married and settled in Prescott where they lived for 25 years. They travelled all over the world, from the far East to Tahiti to the rainforest of Brazil, and of course their winters in Portugal.
Jack will be remembered as a kind and gentle giant, and a man with an ever-present sense of humor.
Jack will join Barbara Ann at St. Clement's Chapel Cemetery in Clontarf, on the Opeongo Road near Lake Clear during a private family celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Anglican Parish of Eganville and Area would be appreciated. (Ottawa Valley News 13 May 201)
