POTTER, Roy - WWII Veteran, Retired Captain of the Toronto Fire Department The family of Roy Potter sadly announces that Roy passed away peacefully at the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital on September 9th, 2008 at the age of 84, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Roy was born in Toronto on March 20th, 1924 to the late Alexander and Daisy Potter. He is the brother of Daisy, Jack and Edgar. He is predeceased by his brothers Harry, Ronald, Alex, Eddie and by his sisters Irene and Jessie. Roy's loving wife of 51 years, Evelyn Potter (nee Damhaut) passed away in 2001. He will be sadly missed by his two children Denise and John, and by his loving granddaughter Kyra. Roy spent his childhood growing up in the Upper Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto. At a very young age he developed a passion for fishing, and spent many years fishing for rainbow trout in the rivers of Southern Georgian Bay. Though his health prevented him from fishing in the years prior to his death, he spent many hours sitting in his living room and enjoying the view of the Nottawasaga River from which he had taken so many rainbow trout over the years. Roy was a proud WWII Veteran. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1941 and proudly served his country as signalman on board HMCS ST THOMAS from 1943 until the end of the war. After the war he joined the Toronto Fire Department where he served for 32 years until his retirement as Captain in 1978. The Potter family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Mark Quigg for his support and dedicated help to Roy and the family. Also a big 'Thank you' to the wonderful doctors and staff of Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. We also wish to thank Dorothy Sampson of St. Elizabeth Health Care, and the many care workers from CCAC who looked after Roy in his last few months, for the care they provided. Thank you also to Dr. Ralph Gilbert of Princess Margaret Hospital. We are very grateful for the assistance provided by the staff of Veterans Affairs Canada in providing support and assistance to Roy. Visitation will be held at the Watts Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 132 River Road East, Wasaga Beach, 705-429-1040 (one block east of Main St.) on Wednesday, September 10 , 2008 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services for Roy will be conducted in the Chapel on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bruce Loveless will officiate. As the lovely town of Meaford was home to Roy and his family for many years, he chose Lakeview Cemetery in Meaford, overlooking beautiful Georgian Bay as his final resting place.
